What is the DCF Award?

DCF logo imageThe Dorothy Canfield Fisher (DCF) Book Award was created to honor excellence in children’s literature. Each year since 1957, Vermont students in grades four through eight have selected their favorite book from a list of 30 nominees. It is recommended that students read at least five of the year’s nominated titles before voting. Thetford Academy does not purchase all of the DCF titles (generally, not the ones for fourth and fifth-graders). If you are a completionist (look it up!) please come see the librarian or submit a request so we can get all of the titles for you.

Who was Dorothy Canfield Fisher?

Dorothy Canfield Fisher was born in Lawrence, Kansas– so why is the Vermont Student’s Choice library award named for her? She wrote wonderful children’s stories– but her controversial viewpoints continue to keep local librarian’s talking about whether she’s worthy of the honor. What do you admire– or dislike– about her? Find out the answers to these questions and more at the Vermont Historical Society.
